GDP Clean Water Program · East Africa

Clean water
changes everything.

GDP installs boreholes and solar-powered pumps across East Africa’s most isolated communities — bringing safe, reliable water that improves health, education, and economic opportunity for entire families.

The challenge — and GDP’s response

For millions in East Africa, safe water is still a daily struggle. GDP is changing that.
Access to clean and safe water remains one of East Africa’s most pressing challenges. But the solutions — boreholes, solar pumps, community infrastructure — are proven, durable, and affordable. GDP builds them.
The water crisis in East Africa
40%
Nearly 40% of the population in some East African countries still struggles to access clean water, leading to widespread waterborne diseases and high child mortality rates. (UNICEF)
hrs
In rural and isolated communities, women and children spend hours every day walking to distant water sources — time stolen from school, work, and family life.
💀
Waterborne diseases from contaminated sources remain a leading cause of child mortality in the region — preventable deaths that access to a clean borehole can stop entirely.
GDP’s answer — infrastructure that lasts
🕳
GDP installs boreholes in strategically chosen locations — accessing deep, clean groundwater and bringing it directly to communities that have never had reliable water access.
☀️
Solar-powered water pumps ensure a reliable, sustainable supply that harnesses clean energy — eliminating costly fuel dependence and ensuring water flows for generations.
🏠
GDP also ensures its partner children’s homes have consistent, clean water — a foundational requirement for the health and well-being of the 590+ children in GDP’s care network.

Our approach

GDP's clean water solutions — built to last generations
GDP’s commitment goes beyond meeting immediate needs — it is about creating lasting sustainability so clean water flows for generations to come, breaking the cycle of poverty and disease.
Flagship · Permanent infrastructure
Borehole Installation
GDP identifies communities in the most urgent need and installs deep boreholes that access clean groundwater directly beneath the surface. Each borehole provides a permanent, community-owned water source — eliminating dependence on distant rivers, open wells, and contaminated surface water that cause widespread disease.
Permanent community water infrastructure
Sustainability · Clean energy
Solar-Powered Water Pumps
GDP installs and maintains solar-powered pumps at each borehole site — harnessing clean, renewable energy to lift water from deep below ground and distribute it to the community. Solar power eliminates costly fuel dependence, reduces maintenance costs, and ensures the water supply is reliable even in remote areas with no electricity grid.
Zero fuel cost · Sustainable for decades
Children’s care · Integrated
Children’s Homes Water Supply
GDP’s partner children’s homes — housing 590+ children daily across Kenya — are part of the clean water network. GDP ensures every child in its care has consistent, reliable access to safe water, supporting the health and development of the most vulnerable young people in the program.
590+ children served daily
Long-term · Community impact
Sustainable Community Infrastructure
Clean water does not just save lives — it transforms them. When women and children no longer spend hours walking to distant water sources, they can attend school, build businesses, and lead healthier lives. GDP’s infrastructure investment breaks the cycle of poverty by addressing one of its most fundamental drivers: the daily cost of water insecurity.

The process

From your gift to flowing clean water — four steps
Here is exactly what happens when you donate to GDP’s clean water program — from community identification to the first clean water flowing from the tap.
1
Community identification
GDP’s Kenya team identifies the communities with the most urgent need — evaluating water access, health data, population density, and geographic isolation to prioritize where a borehole will save the most lives.
2
Borehole drilling
GDP’s construction team — led by engineer Greg Hoffmann, 20+ years of Kenya infrastructure experience — drills the borehole to reach clean, uncontaminated groundwater beneath the surface. Depth and location are determined by hydrogeological survey.
3
Solar pump installation
A solar-powered pump system is installed at the borehole — panels, motor, storage tank, and tap points — providing a reliable, fuel-free water supply. Before-and-after water quality testing from a certified Nairobi laboratory confirms safety.
4
Clean water flows
Community members — who previously walked hours for water — now have clean, safe water at the tap. GDP maintains the system and monitors water quality to ensure the supply remains safe and reliable for generations to come.
