Evelyn S. Weatherspoon Scholarship Fund

Each year, numerous young adults raised in our Children’s Home flourish within the nurturing environment we provide. Not only do they thrive socially, but they also achieve remarkable success academically. In fact, over 85% of these young adults graduate high school, with many excelling beyond expectations. These bright, gifted, and talented individuals often develop a strong desire to pursue higher education—a dream that once seemed out of reach.
To ensure these dreams become reality, we established the Evelyn S. Weatherspoon Scholarship Fund. Evelyn Weatherspoon was a dedicated African-American educator who passionately believed in the potential of every child she encountered. She inspired countless students to recognize their unique gifts and talents, encouraging them to dream boldly and believe in their ability to achieve those dreams. Her unwavering commitment to education and empowerment continued until her untimely passing from cancer at age 56. Evelyn was not only a beloved teacher but also my mother—the very person who inspired me to carry forward her legacy of inspiring others.
The Evelyn S. Weatherspoon Scholarship Fund supports young adults from the Children’s Home who have excelled academically and gained acceptance into accredited trade schools or institutions of higher learning approved by GDP’s Board of Advisors. Selected students receive full tuition coverage for each year they remain in good academic standing.
We need your support to continue this vital work! The average annual tuition per student is $1,250 USD. With a donation of $12,500, we can fully fund scholarships for 10 deserving students. Alternatively, you can sponsor a full four-year scholarship for one student for $5,000 USD, honoring someone special in your life with a named scholarship.
By investing in these scholarships, you directly empower young adults to pursue higher education and unlock a future filled with opportunity. Join us in making dreams attainable and transforming lives through education.
